Here’s Your Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Licensed
Massage therapy is a rewarding and growing career in Canada. However, the path to becoming a licensed massage therapist (RMT) depends on the province you live in. In Ontario, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island, massage therapy is a regulated health profession. In other provinces, it’s not yet regulated—so the process may differ.
What Does “Regulated” Mean?
In regulated provinces, you must meet specific education, exam, and licensing requirements in order to legally practice as a massage therapist. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to get started:
Step 1: Choose an Accredited Massage Therapy School
Before enrolling, make sure the school you’re considering is accredited or recognized by your provincial regulatory body.
Important:
Starting in 2027, provinces like Ontario will require graduation from a school accredited by the Canadian Massage Therapy Council for Accreditation (CMTCA) in order to take the registration exams.
If you attend a non-accredited program, you may be denied access to the OSCE and MCQ exams.
Step 2: Graduate and Register for the Certification Exams
Once you complete your program, your school will send your graduation information directly to your province’s regulatory body (e.g., CMTO in Ontario).
You will then be eligible to register for:
- OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination)
- MCQ (Multiple Choice Question Exam)
These exams test your hands-on skills and theoretical knowledge. You must pass both to become licensed.
Step 3: Get Professional Liability Insurance
After passing your exams, you’ll need professional liability insurance before you can register to practice.
This insurance protects you in the event of a legal claim related to your massage therapy work.
In Ontario, here are some options to consider:
- Lachner McLennan Insurance
- Trisura (available through RMTAO)- sign up to RMTAO for free while you are still a student
Choose the provider and plan that suits your needs, then submit your insurance information to your regulatory body (e.g., CMTO).
Step 4: Receive Your License and Start Practicing
Once all requirements are met, you’ll receive your official license and registration number. You’re now legally authorized to practice massage therapy in your province!
Congratulations—You’re an RMT!
The path to becoming a massage therapist in Canada takes dedication, but the reward is a fulfilling, flexible, and meaningful career helping others.
